Start with a drive to Umbwe Gate, where you’ll register and begin the trek. The trail ascends steeply through dense rainforest with towering trees, tangled vines, and the sounds of wildlife. This challenging climb leads to Umbwe Cave Camp, offering your first glimpse of the mountain’s dramatic scenery.
Elevation: 2,850 m to 3,960 m (9,350 ft to 13,000 ft)
Distance: ~6 km / 3.7 miles
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Heath/Moorland
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Continue ascending along a ridge through thinning forest and into the heather zone. The trail becomes less steep as you approach Barranco Camp, situated in a stunning valley beneath the iconic Barranco Wall and surrounded by giant groundsels.

Distance: ~6 km / 3.7 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Karanga Camp
Climb the Barranco Wall, a thrilling and non-technical ascent with breathtaking views. The trail then winds through undulating terrain with gradual ascents and descents, arriving at Karanga Camp in the afternoon for rest and acclimatization.

Distance: ~4 km / 2.5 miles

Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Today’s trek takes you to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. The trail traverses barren, rocky terrain with striking views of Kibo Peak. Upon arrival, rest and prepare for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Elevation: 4,673 m to 5,895 m (15,331 ft to 19,341 ft), then down to 3,067 m (10,065 ft)
Distance: ~15 km / 9.3 miles
Hiking Time: 12-15 hours
Habitat: Summit: Arctic; Descent: Rainforest
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Start the summit push at midnight, trekking through the Arctic zone toward Stella Point. After a brief stop, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement before descending back to Barafu Camp for brunch and onward to Mweka Camp.

Distance: ~10 km / 6.2 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

After breakfast at Mweka Camp, begin your final descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Enjoy the vibrant greenery and possible wildlife sightings as you make your way down the mountain. At the gate, collect your summit certificate and celebrate your incredible achievement. From here, transfer back to your lodge for a well-deserved rest and reflection on your remarkable journey
