Day 0: Arrival in Moshi

Elevation: 915 m / 3,000 ft
Habitat: Urban
Accommodation: River Trees Country Inn or Arusha Coffee Lodge.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your guide will transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. Enjoy a pre-trek briefing, where you’ll review your gear and learn about the journey ahead. Take the evening to relax and prepare for the climb.

Distance: ~11 km / 6.8 miles
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Accommodation: Machame Camp

Begin your adventure with a drive to Machame Gate, where you’ll register and meet the trekking team. The hike starts in the rainforest, where you’ll see lush vegetation and perhaps monkeys and exotic birds. Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon.

Distance: ~5 km / 3.1 miles
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

Accommodation: Shira Camp

The trek continues with a steep ascent through heather and moorland, offering stunning views of the Kibo Peak and the Shira Plateau. The trail becomes less dense as you ascend, and you’ll arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon.

This is an important acclimatization day. Hike to the iconic Lava Tower, reaching an altitude of 4,630 m, before descending to Barranco Camp. This trek helps your body adapt to the higher altitudes while offering dramatic views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and valleys.

Distance: ~6 km / 3.7 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Karanga Campro’s glaciers and cliffs.

Start your day with the thrilling climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical ascent offering incredible views. The trail continues with gentle ascents and descents, arriving at Karanga Camp by mid-afternoon.

Distance: ~4 km / 2.5 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Barafu Camp

Today’s trek takes you to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. The route features gradual ascents through barren, rocky terrain. Upon arrival, rest and prepare for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, starting at midnight.

Elevation: 4,673 m to 5,895 m (15,331 ft to 19,341 ft), then down to 3,067 m (10,065 ft)
Distance: ~15 km / 9.3 miles
Hiking Time: 12-15 hours
Habitat: Summit: Arctic; Descent: Rainforest
Accommodation: Mweka Camp

Begin the summit push at midnight, trekking under a starry sky toward Stella Point, then on to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your accomplishment, descend back to Barafu Camp for brunch, then continue to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. From there, transfer back to Moshi for rest and relaxation or continue to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.
